Reflections from the Wisconsin Real Estate PhD Alumni Conference

The conference was held at Grainger Hall, May 31 and June 1, 2026, commemorating the 125th anniversary of the Wisconsin School of Business. The conference brought together the Wisconsin Real Estate PhD community PhD alumni, real estate and related faculty, and current doctoral students.

In addition to current faculty, several Emeriti Professors attended: Richard Green, Steve Malpezzi and Kerry Vandell, as well as other special guests.

The full program and list of participants can be found here.  Over two days 10 rigorous research papers were presented and discussed on various aspects of commercial real estate, housing markets, and mortgage markets.

Along with the rigorous research, there was also discussion of history and public and private policy. The conference kicked off with Faculty Alumni Reflections from Green, Malpezzi and Vandell. As is my custom, I prepared some slides reviewing a little history and a few possible scenarios about the future. You can download a slightly modified version of the presentation here.

Many thanks to Professor Lu Han, who organized a terrific conference with help from many including Dayin Zhang, Lee Gottschalk, Jacques Gordon, and many others.

I was doubly pleased to be on campus in Madison again, just in time to extend my thanks to two of the Graaskamp Center's administrators, Genie Trewyn and the aforementioned Lee Gottschalk, who are retiring after years of utterly first-rate professional service to students and faculty alike. Best wishes to Lee and Genie!
